Grilled Orange - Chocolate Cakes

This recipe was made on a whim after seeing a picture on Pinterest. For us, we only used two oranges and used the rest of the cake batter for a small cake. The cake in the oranges turned out quite moist with just a hint of orange flavor. The homemade chocolate cream cheese frosting was the icing on the cake (sorry, couldn't help myself!). It perfectly paired the orange and chocolate together. (1 orange = 1 serving)

You'll need:
Oranges (how many you need depends on how many little cakes you want to make!)
Box(s) Devil's Food cake mix

Start by cutting the top off your orange. Keep the top, it's your lid!

Using a citrus spoon (the spoons with the teeth on the end that are used when eating a grapefruit), carefully cut around the inside of the orange. You'll plop out the insides into a bowl (don't throw them away! Use them in a fruit smoothie or pulverize and add to the leftover chocolate cake batter). Then you'll want to use your fingers and pull away the skin from the inside sides. It'll peel right off.

This is what your orange should look like after you take out the insides. Now grab a wet paper towel and wipe it off (inside and outside).

Mix up your cake batter according to the box instructions. If you want to add another egg to make it extra rich, that'd work too. (I left mine plain as I wanted this recipe to be as easy as it could be!)

Fill the orange half-full with cake batter.

Then, set the lid on top….

And use two toothpicks (one on either side) to help secure the orange and lid together.

Carefully wrap the orange cakes in aluminum foil and set on a preheated grill (about medium-low heat) on the second rack (if you have one). Just so long as the cakes aren't on the rack directly above the flames. This way, the heat isn't too overwhelming on one side and they cook more evenly. You'll want to turn them over a couple of times throughout the cooking process. In the end, they should cook for around 25 - 30 minutes.

You'll have to open the foil on one of the cakes to tell if they're done (I'd do this when you can smell them and it's been around 25 minutes). If they're done, close up the one you checked and let them all sit on the counter for about five minutes. Then, unwrap them and let them sit for another 10 minutes to cool and finish cooking in the centers.

Whip up your Homemade Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting (or whatever kind you like!) and liberally top the oranges with it.

Serve right away and enjoy!
